Publicity work is also commonly referred to as “media relations”. The general idea is, of course, to proactively influence more positive publicity and less negative publicity. While this is true for some brands, most brands just want to combat anonymity and build awareness around their actual existence.
Many equate public relations with publicity work. Publicity is a tangible result and easy to understand and relate to.
Many also see publicity work as a form of media manipulation, a destructive and misleading force in society. And since public relations is often seen as just publicity work, the PR industry has been struggling with this reputation problem for a long time.
Needless to say, I don’t think that this irony, that PR has a serious reputation problem, is lost on anyone working in our industry.
