I honestly hate that ‘storytelling’ is such a cliché in marketing and public relations. For me, storytelling isn’t about ‘telling a story’.
Storytelling is about understanding the stories we tell. How we tell them and why we tell them. By understanding storytelling at the basic level, powerful techniques can be used to persuade and engage.
And this is why storytelling go hand in hand with writing, because writing is the basic drawing board for crafting communication that works. And whether or not it works often depend on our basic understanding of storytelling.
Sure, both storytelling and writing can be used to tell a story. But telling a story isn’t always necessary; there are plenty of situations when ‘telling a story’ is just not the way to go.
This is why I’m focused on exploring foundational principles of both storytelling and writing.
